WHEN TO REFER
Some high-risk medications such as opioids to treat pain and some benzodiazepines used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders may be prescribed to individuals who have sustained work-related or motor vehicle-related injuries. However, these medications carry a significant risk of adverse health effects, dependence, and accidental overdose. To evaluate the overall medication profile being prescribed, an insurer may request a medication review to obtain an independent assessment.
